On 1 January 2024, a earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 struck Ishikawa prefecture, specifically on the Noto peninsula, causing a minor tsunami, several fires and significant damage to infrastructure in various parts of the prefecture. The quake, the strongest recorded on Japan’s shindo scale, was followed by several strong aftershocks. Tsunami waves were recorded in some areas.
