A severe winter storm continues to affect the Ohio Valley, the Mid-Atlantic and the North-East of the United States, causing significant ice build-up, power outages and dangerous travelling conditions. This phenomenon has caused the cancellation of more than 500 flights and delays to at least 2,800 air operations.
The adverse weather conditions have caused disruptions at the region’s main airports, including Philadelphia (PHL), Boston (BOS), New York (JFK, LGA, EWR), as well as in northeast and mid-Atlantic terminals such as Hartford (BDL), Providence (PVD), Portland (PWM) and Manchester (MHT). Persistent rainfall in the early hours of Friday morning in northern New England is keeping runways slippery and affecting air operations in Bangor (BGR), Burlington (BTV) and Syracuse (SYR), among others.
This event is just the beginning of a particularly intense period of winter storms in the northern tier of the United States. At least two new fronts are expected to affect the region in the coming week. The next storm will move from the west coast across the Rocky Mountains and the northern Plains on Friday and strengthen on Saturday. The northeast will again be affected by snow and freezing rain over the weekend, again impacting connections at key airports.
