Turkey. Terrorist bomb attack in Istanbul
Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely in Istanbul as of Nov. 14 following an explosion in Taksim Square, Beyoglu District, evening Nov. 13. The blast killed at least six people and injured 81 others.
The blast on Sunday occurred a short walk from Taksim Square, a large plaza in the center of Istanbul surrounded by hotels, restaurants, a large mosque and subway and bus stops that link visitors to other parts of the city.
The person who planted the bomb has been arrested. Istiklal Avenue is a pedestrianized street popular with tourists that contains many shops and restaurants.
Despite the attack, there are no security queues, baggage problems or flight delays at Istanbul Airport.
Avoid the blast site. Heed the instructions of local officials. Plan for ground transport delays. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
